Course Description

This course is meant to equip graduate students with knowledge and skills regarding basic stages in educational research. The course also offers knowledge and skills about the generation of quantitative data using different data collection methods and instruments. It seeks to improve graduate students’ knowledge and skills about statistical applications and way of presenting, analyzing, and discussing the generated quantitative research findings. Generally, the course aims at preparing skilled and competent educational tutors, researchers, planners and managers.

Aims and Objectives

This course introduces students to quantitative research methods in education with a view to equipping them with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to undertake their postgraduate research. More specifically, the objectives of the course are to:

1)   Develop an understanding of the role of research in making arguments and decisions

2)   Acquire skills of conceptualising a research project and writing up a research proposal and report.

3)   Acquire basic knowledge of theoretical frameworks for undertaking educational research

4)   Develop ability to search for appropriate literature and make sense of its practical educational value or implications and use

5)   Acquire basic knowledge and skills for quantitative research designs and implementation

6)   Develop ability to critically evaluate research reports and use them for decision making

7)   Develop professional report writing skills

 

Learning Outcomes

Course Assessment

The course will take 60 hours of lectures and seminars (45 and 15 hours respectively). The assessment for this course involves three main stages as follows:

1)         Assignments, Projects and/or Article reviews/critiques: 30%

2)         Two Written Tests: 20%,

3)         University Examination (UE): 50%
