Welcome to PS 337. This course orient students to the theoretical and practical debates related to the dynamics of relationship between civil society and state. The course begins with conceptual and theoretical issues that inform the justification of the meaning, nature and functions of civil society, and then it descends to the historical development of civil society institutions at global and domestic levels. From the historical perspective, the students are encouraged to examine the internal functioning of civil society organizations in Tanzania and other African countries.

Specific attention will be paid to the policy and legal framework that guide the formation and functioning of civil society organizations in Tanzania. Finally, the course shall introduce the students to the current and popular Third Sector view of civil society and how justifiable it is in the context of Tanzanian civil society.
