Objectives:

The course provides an understanding of management principles and perspectives vital to a mine manager's successful running of a mining enterprise. The course provides skill-based information covering supervisory principles, theories, human-relation techniques and decision-making skills that are required to manage a workforce to profitable results.

 

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the principles involved in mine management and to apply them in likely employment situations.
  • Demonstrate a sound working knowledge of the mining law;
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of planning and managing a given mining project within the time frame and within the allocated budget;
  • Demonstrate ability to manage human resources and labour disputes and resolve conflicts.

Course Contents:

  • Management and Leadership: forms of management, organizational structures, project management and mine administration, risk management, and modern management tools, financial & management information systems, human behaviour, contracts & contractors, joint ventures, international issues, professional ethics, team dynamics, development of leadership skills, management of human resources.
  • Mining Laws: The Tanzania Mining legislations and regulations, administration of mines, enforcements;
  • Mining Management: Principles of mine management and labour relations to include grievance procedure and arbitration. Labour job categories and descriptions, role of the local union in management and labour contract administration, and fundamentals of grievance redress, mediation, and the use of arbitration as a means of reducing mining industrial conflicts
  • Project management: Concept, planning, implementation, and closedown (Work breakdown structure, earned value, PERT/CPM/Gantt Charts, scheduling charts, scope control, cost control, change control, and resource planning).
