This course examines the legal and regulatory environment for banking and finance with brief

reference to the activities of other deposit and non-deposit taking financial instructions such as

microfinance banks, microfinance institutions, and cooperative societies The course does not deal

with payment systems as those are covered in Advanced Payment System course. Thus, aspects

relating to negotiable instruments, electronic money transfer and similar transactional systems are

will not be covered. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the historical development

of Tanzania banking sector U and how this history still shapes a wide range of current laws,

regulations, and policies. Specifically, students should be able to demonstrate the following at the

end of this course;

• A general understanding of the law of banking in Tanzania.

• An in-depth understanding of regulation of banking systems in Tanzania

• An understanding of the role and practices of commercial banking in the country

• An understating of the relationship between banking sector and other related activities such

as insurance, financial leasing, etc

• An appreciation of developing trends in the banking industry, especially those triggered by

ICT developments such as internet banking, mobile banking, etc
