1. Course description
Research and the data it produces is an essential element of Economics. As such, data can inform us about important economic issues. This course will link economic theory and practice thus equip students with research techniques to address practical economic problems. The course covers research problem identification, literature review, research design, sampling, data collection, data analysis, results interpretation and discussion, and report writing.
2. Required prerequisites
The pre-requisite is that the student has knowledge of core economic theory and has satisfactory knowledge of econometrics and quantitative techniques.
3. Course objectives
- To explain the stages of formulating research questions and research designs.
- To introduce data collection methods, sampling and research ethics.
- To introduce principles of report writing.
- To consider research dissemination and presentation.
4. Course outcomes
Students completing the course are expected to:
• Write a research proposal that shows an understanding of the research process.
• Formulate research problems, questions and research objectives, and select a research design.
• Undertake a critical literature review, and apply quantitative or qualitative techniques in the analysis of economic phenomena and to conduct empirical research.
• Make effective presentation of proposal and research findings.

5. Modality
This is a practical oriented course. Instructors are expected to use approaches and provide exercises that enable students the actual task of doing research.
At each stage students will be expected to produce an outcome related to the topic.
At the end of the semester students are expected to come out with a term paper that has covered all the steps of research. This will be a prerequisite for presentation of their M.A. proposal.
